The objective is to be the first to reach 12 points. Each player receives 3 cards, and the player with the highest card played wins the trick; the best of three tricks wins the round. The round's points are determined by the "gritos" ("Truco," "Vale 6," "Vale 9," and "Partido") agreed upon beforehand.

In Truco Paulista, the trump cards ("manilhas") are dynamic. The "manilhas" for the hand consist of the four cards ranked immediately above the flipped card ("vira") in the cyclic order [4]-3-2-A-K-J-Q-7-6-5-4-[3]. These "manilhas" are ranked by suits in descending order: Clubs > Hearts > Spades > Diamonds. The remaining cards are ranked in Truco's standard order: 3-2-A-K-J-Q-7-6-5-4, without their "manilha" rank. For example, if the flip is a Jack, the cards are sorted from highest to lowest: K of Clubs - K of Hearts - K of Spades - K of Diamonds - 3 - 2 - A - J - Q - 7 - 6 - 5 - 4.

In Truco Mineiro, the first four cards serve as fixed trump cards. The card hierarchy from highest to lowest is as follows: four of clubs; seven of hearts; ace of spades; seven of diamonds; threes; twos; aces of hearts, clubs, and diamonds; kings; jacks; queens; black sevens; sixes; fives; and non-club fours.
